An extraordinary fruit: camu camu

Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a native fruit of the Peruvian jungle with a red and green color and an acid flavor. According to a note in Vogue magazine Germany, it indicates that it is the world's richest fruit in vitamins and points out that it has the highest vitamin C content in the world (2780 mg/100 g), 30 to 50 times more than oranges. In addition to vitamin B, beta-carotene, and iron in amounts that exceed any other citrus fruit.

At Amazonia we have different products that have camu camu in their composition, from natural powders to cosmetic products or natural soaps. According to popular wisdom, "camu camu" is the sound that fish produce when they eat the camu camu fruits that fall into the water, which is why camu camu has been used in the Amazon as fishing bait.

In the language of the Shipibo-Conibo ethnic group, they know camu camu as "camo-camo" and they use the pigments from the fruit's rind to dye the vegetable fibers of the Chambira (Amazon palm tree). It is traditionally used in Loreto (Peruvian region), to cure the following diseases: asthma, arteriosclerosis, cataracts, depression, flu, gingivitis, glaucoma, hepatitis, migraine infertility, osteoporosis, and Parkinson's. Also, as an analgesic, antiviral and antioxidant (Pinedo M. and Armas M., 2007).

Unquestionably, the high concentration of vitamin C that this fruit contains is extremely important for our body, since it is necessary to form collagen, proper wound healing, as well as the production of hormones and neurotransmitters. Also, like other vitamins, it is a powerful antioxidant.

In case the camu camu grabs your attention, you can use it in the preparation of soft drinks, liquors, ice cream, sweets, jams, and nectars. Peruvian brands such as Ecoandino, Saysi, and Bi natural bring the camu camu in different versions that you will definitely love.
